What Inspired you to Create your Brand?

After losing my mom to melanoma skin cancer, I became a big advocate of wearing sunscreen. However, most of the sunscreens on the market use chemical UV blockers and contain a lot of toxic ingredients. It didn’t make sense to me to use these types of sunscreens to prevent skin cancer only to get another kind of cancer. After several years of research and investigation, I decided to develop my own sun care line that uses non-toxic ingredients. With skin cancer on the rise, it was important to me to create a safe sunscreen that felt good, smelled good and came in pretty packaging so that people would use it on a daily basis.

How did you get the idea behind the brand?

I came across the EWG’s Skin Deep Sunscreen Guide and learned that most sunscreens on the market contained toxic ingredients. I started to sell the ones that they rated as safe on my beauty website. After hearing feedback from customers about what they liked and didn’t like about the various sunscreens, I set out on a mission to create a safe sunscreen that people would be motivated to wear on a daily basis…one that smelled good, wasn’t greasy, and didn’t stay white on the skin.

What is the story behind the brand name?

Suntegrity stands for sunscreen made with integrity and it also means sunscreen that maintains the integrity of your skin. I came up with the name in a class I was taking at USM when I was sharing with a classmate that we use zinc oxide as our active ingredient instead of chemical uv blockers linked with endocrine disruption. When my classmate said she loved the integrity of what we were doing, the name “Suntegrity” popped into my mind.

What was the first product you created?

Suntegrity Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen & Primer, Broad Spectrum SPF 30 was our first product to launch and it has received a #1 rating by the EWG/Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database for its safety and efficacy several years in a row.

Standout product?

I would have said Suntegrity Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen & Primer is our “standout” product because it is a “3 in 1” product that has won numerous awards including the Allure 2013 Best of Beauty Award and the Spa Heroes Expert Selection, but now that we launched Suntegrity LIP C.P.R., I’d have to say that is the new standout product because it is truly one of a kind. There are no other SPF 30 sunscreen lipsticks made with zinc oxide on the market that we know of.

Best seller?

This is a tie between the Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen & Primer and the 5 in 1 Tinted Face Sunscreen in the Light Shade.

Is there a prominent ingredient in your line?

Our active sunscreen ingredient is non-nano size zinc-oxide which is therapeutic and great for sensitive and aggravated skin (eczema, rosacea, rashes, sunburn, itching). Zinc oxide in known to help calm rosacea, inflammation, acne and melasma. It is the same ingredient used in calamine lotion, rosacea treatments and rash creams.

What inspired you to develop a sunscreen lipstick line?

We were requested by customers to make a product for the lips and when we scoured the internet for a sunscreen lipstick with SPF 30 made with zinc oxide as opposed to chemical uv blockers, we couldn’t find one…that’s when we knew we had to make one. The great thing about using zinc oxide as the active ingredient is that zinc oxide is actually used as a dietary supplement so if you happen to swallow any when you lick your lips, you don’t have to worry.

What should one look for when shopping for sunscreen?

I recommend that people turn over the bottle and read the active ingredients – look for Zinc Oxide, avoid Octinoxate, Oxybenzone, Octisalate, etc! Those are the ingredients linked to endocrine disruption. Zinc Oxide is safe and has been used for years in diaper rash cream.
